SPN Rewatch #16
Sep. 21st, 2014 10:57 pm9.03 I'm No Angel
The primary focus of this episode is to create empathy for Cas as he navigates being human...there is a mix of the humorous, as Cas comments on the mundane to the startlement of those around him, and the poignant as we see the kindness of strangers.
I found the conversation between Cas and th woman praying in the church to be particularly affecting:
Your lack of faith doesn't cancel what I believe.
Those words really resonate for me. For everyone to use as a way to coexist...
Annoying dumb moment for Dean not knowing Clarence from "It's a Wonderful life." Come on!
We root for Sam and Dean to locate Cas...only for April to kill him before their eyes.
An important point: Zeke/Gadreel chooses to resurrect Cas completely voluntarily! Dean doesn't ask, doesn't even know Zeke could do this...and I see that impulsive action as coming from Zeke/Gadreel still being one of 'the good guys' at this point, that he considers Cas too worthy to be just snuffed like that.
It's also significant that at the start of the episode Sam has been out running, and he's feeling great...Zeke heals Cas, and in the next episode Zeke says how resurrecting Cas drained him.
This is the episode that revises the lore on Reapers, turning them into another type of angel...That doesn't bother me as much as it bothers some, since it doesn't feel to me like they are negating or contradicting previous lore, just hijacking it to go in a different direction. I'm sure it could have been done in a way that didn't do that, but knowing where it goes at the end of the season, there's no point in wasting energy on it.
But, after all the work to get Cas to safety, Zeke declares Cas can't stay in the bunker, and gives Dean that impossible choice: do you want me healing your brother or Cas here--pick one. We know what Dean has to pick.
I wonder though, if why Zeke really wanted Cas out was because he was afraid that even though Cas was no longer an angel, he might detect the angel in Sam. Because really, the bunker is the safest place on the planet, right? It made no sense to kick him out for fear the other angels would find Cas.
It's my personal canon that Dean sent Cas out with a backpack of food, clothes, and some money.
9.04 Slumber Party
Another stand-alone episode, with the balls to crosswire real world reality--the Wizard of Oz books--into the SPN world. I admit I watched this one with a skeptical 'how are they going to pull this off and not make me cringe' attitude...and surprisingly, it didn't make me wince the first or second time.
Charlie was of course, her usual combination of bubbly, brilliant, and competent--poppy seed bullets! Loved when Sam called her the 'smartest one in the room' :)
Dorothy was okay, though I got tired of the chip on her shoulder...the two Men of Letters from the Thirties were given amusing dialog...the witch was creepy, especially the whole 'tongue cut out' part...
The boys were working in tandem, though having a heart-to-heart about Sam not feeling the bunker is his home in the middle of a hunt was a touch...odd...OTOH, it was a nice moment, especially in light of Sam seeming to come around at the end...Loved them marathoning "Game of Thrones!"
Heart of the episode was Charlie's flying leap to save Dean from the witch's blast and dying, and Dean demanding Zeke use his angel powers again to save Charlie. But Zeke says the resurrection stuff takes it out of him, will make him need to stay longer in Sam, though he could help with the witch problem...and Dean chooses Charlie. Like there is any other option. He and Sam can handle the witch.
But it's another step on the road to Zeke being able to hold Sam hostage to manipulate Dean.
Slight inconsistency here in that Charlie has been in heaven with her parents, yet we later find out the dead have been trapped in the Veil since the closing of heaven. Letting it pass, though because it's just one of those errors that happen in writing a series when you don't know the details of future eps while writing the current one.
Oh, and best lines:
Dorothy: You have no idea how odd it is having a series of books written about you.
Sam: Actually, I do know...
9.05 Dog Dean Afternoon
Jensen's sense of comedic timing and Sam getting his neck slashed open make this episode...
Oh Dean, your harping on Sam to take it easy is sending up red signal flags to your brother...He doesn't see any reason for you to be so preoccupied with his health, as far as he feels, he is fine. He has no idea that it's Zeke juicing him...and when Sam finds out the truth, he is going to revisit your concern as lying to him and add it to his anger over what you did to him...
Kevin gets to be in this episode by virtue of reference...The set decorators went crazy with the taxidermist's set...The interlude with the pigeon is hysterical...The killer rising out of the red patterned wallpaper is a stunning visual...The monster is a new one...
I have to admit watching this time I was watching Jensen's face and mannerisms rather than seeing Dean Winchester. But I didn't care, it was priceless, and a lot of my enjoyment was in picturing Jensen coming up with his reactions. Can you imagine how much fun was had filming this ep?
Sam reaction to getting slashed in the throat was one of the more convincing injuries one of the boys has taken--it looked very realistic to me. And the switch to Zeke to save Sam's life--a tense moment. Well done, show! Yeah, it was all light-hearted and cute until Sam gets attacked...I should be used to show doing that to me by now, shouldn't I?
The animal voices really sound cartoonish and pulled me out of the episode...And how did they pick the scenes for the "Then" clip? The second chunk of them had nothing to do with the episode...

Date: 2014-09-22 11:33 am (UTC)I think this is it. Cas knew Ezekiel well enough to vouch for him, so even if he can't see grace or true forms or whatever anymore, he might well still figure out that it isn't really him.
I know Slumber Party isn't a popular episode, but I really quite liked it. :D (I do hope Charlie will come back at some point though!)
