I read your story this morning, and I just gotta say - I absolutely loved it!!!! I love stories with John, especially a John that is stern, but loving with his children. And your voice for John is the way I would think he would be with his boys. I have read other stories where the author depicts John as this hard as nails, tough, rough father that doesn't show much love to his boys. I don't care for that characterization, because I don't believe that is who John really was.
Yes, he may have been hard on Dean and Sam, acted like a drill sargeant much of the time, but he was also a loving man who cared deeply for his boys. I love the angst he felt about the job, putting Dean and Sam in harms way and how conflicted he felt at times. Wanting to do what is right for them.
I also loved the interaction between Dean and Sam. Their closeness is definitely a relationship to be envied. I love how they are with each other. I loved it how Sam was the one that talked Dean into getting the second surgery. That was lovely. I, like John, would have loved to know what Sam said to him to get him to change his mind.
Again, loved the story. Definitely on my list of must reads. In fact, I'll probably have to rec this one.
I have to say, to write John in this, I just flashed back to the times when I said the wrong thing to one of my kids, knowing as it was coming out of my mouth that it was not a good way to express myself and saying it anyway...
I really appreciate that you let me know how this story felt to you!
