Friday morning a dear friend stopped by to visit as I convalesced. She was very upset because she had just been informed by one of her daughter's high school peers that her daughter was smoking--and her daughter has serious asthma.

My friend wanted to talk out how to broach the subject with her daughter, and was leaning towards asking directly "Are you smoking?"

My mind went to the episode in season 4 where Dean asks Sam straight out if he was using his demon powers and Sam flat-out lied and said no. I realized that was the start of the breakdown of their relationship. Dean wanted to hear 'no' and didn't press, and once Sam lied he couldn't come back later and admit he'd lied then, and the untruths piled up from that point.

So I counseled my friend to NOT ask a question that her daughter could lie to. I suggested she state that she found out that her daughter has been smoking and continue with "I am really concerned about this," and not to let the conversation get sidetracked into how did she find out.

My friend grasped the difference in the approach as I explained what happened between Sam and Dean,(she has never watched the show, but has PATIENTLY listened to me obsess for the last 3 months...she is really a good friend!) and is going to try what I suggested and let me know how it turns out.

So I stick my tongue out at my family members who think I've lost it. :P

Hey, I use stuff I've learned from Buffy all the time. I think that was great advice.
Hope you're feeling better!

Speaking as someone who is not a family member... I tend to think all of my friends have lost it.

It might just be me, of course.

[Manfully resists bringing up a Stargate reference at this point.]

Are you a Stargate fan? Spent the spring and summer going through that series and enjoying it, though not obsessing...

Closet Trekker, perhaps? :)

No, I could take or leave the various Treks (mostly I watched, it's just that I had no problem with waiting for re-runs or syndication).

I started watching Stargate obsessively after catching what was probably season 4 on broadcast TV. I started getting the DVDs in order to see the scenes that were cut to make room for broadcast commercials.

Much of my enjoyment was that I just liked the look of the show. It's designed very well. I could do without the government secrecy part though. With each passing year it got more and more implausible.
