Rewatch of Supernatural 2022

Season 3 General Observations

We saw as early as the season 1 episode ‘Faith’ that Dean, despite his bravado, suffered from low self-esteem, and that played out in his decision to trade his soul for Sam’s life. Season 3 continues that theme for Dean, making the viewers hurt right along with Sam as Dean continues to devalue himself. What was fascinating to me this rewatch, though, was Sam’s character reveals, knowing what happens in season 4. This time around I could see how, even though he loved Dean intensely, Sam was still in competition with his big brother and that need to prove he was better—smarter—contributed to his falling for Ruby’s deception. Again, the first time through you don’t know Ruby’s real end game, but watching this time made me want to smack Sam upside the head and call him an idiot…sigh. Real kudos to the writers for laying the groundwork so well for the character development in the next season.

(Hoping the cut worked this time--if not, sorry...)

Also a production note—I am not a terribly visual person but I did notice that this season the show is definitely brighter in the earlier episodes, though it eventually reverts to something closer to the first seasons.

Note: I am adding the names of the writers and directors for each episode (as ‘W:’ and ‘D:’) because I started getting curious about who was doing the best job of character development and story continuity.

45. The Magnificent Seven (3.01)—W: Kripke/D: Manners
The Road So Far—'Hell’s Bells’—covers monsters, women, Dean’s deal, demons release
Dean with the twins, Sam walks in on him
There have been demon clouds over 17 cities
Dean’s emphasis on living it up for his last year to avoid facing what’s going to happen
Isaac and Tamara are annoying
Something that never shows up again: using palo santo (holy wood from Peru) to stake demons—‘acts like holy water’
Dean picks up the coroner’s assistant over the phone (I’m realizing that a big chunk of Dean’s womanizer reputation is from hearing about it, not necessarily seeing it)
Isaac and Tamara: ‘Not teaming up with the damn fools who opened the Devil’s Gate’—boys realize they now have a less-than-ideal reputation
Dean hits on the salesclerk when they are investigating the murder—when Sam calls him on it Dean invokes his ‘last days’ and Sam apologizes
Boys are following Bobby’s directions—he’s the leader now
They drive into the bar in Bobby’s car
When Sam calls Dean’s plan suicide Dean says he’s dead already

Pride calls Sam ‘the Boy King’
Mysterious woman (Ruby) rescues Sam
Sam calls out Dean on his death wish—Dean says breaking his deal kills Sam
Sam cites Dean’s hypocrisy for putting Sam through what Dean felt about Dad’s deal for him, says he’s selfish—Dean is ‘okay with that’—says he’s tired and sees a light at the end of the tunnel—Sam: ‘it’s hellfire’
Dean: ‘So what do you say we kill some evil sons of bitches and we raise a little hell’
This episode has always felt flat to me—for all the hype about how bad the 7 deadly sin demons were, they went down pretty easy, and Tamara and Isaac were too annoying for me to care about

46. The Kids are All Right (3.02)—W: Gamble/D: Sgriccia
Recap—‘Kill some evil sons of bitches and raise a little hell’ is new tag, shows up on almost every recap for rest of season replacing ‘saving people, hunting things’; Dean’s deal, mystery blonde (Ruby)
Girl says there are monsters at dad’s house—rewatching we know she is the monster
Dean finds fake hunt to go to Cicero where Lisa Braeden lives
Dean: ‘Remember that road trip I took about eight years ago now? You were in Orlando with Dad wrapping up that banshee thing.’ So Dean would have been around 19
Lisa knows Dean’s real name
Ben really a mini-Dean—Dean clearly wondering if Ben is his pretty quickly

Ruby suggests Sam look into what happened to his mom’s friends/relatives

Lisa pissed at Dean for teaching Ben violence
It is daylight when the mom straps the changeling girl into her carseat—it is night when they get to the lake
When Dean tries to get Lisa to take Ben out of town she calls him on the fake credit card
Smart Dean identifies the red on the windowsill as red dirt from a construction site
Mom changeling really beats up the boys
Lisa confirms Ben not Dean’s—‘I did a blood test when he was a baby. There was this guy – some bar back in a biker joint…Leather jacket, couple of scars, no mailing address’ (How did she get his DNA to test?)
Dean: …this house and a kid... it's not my life. Never will be…I would have been proud to be his dad’
Sam finds out mom’s contacts are all dead (and this plot point is never referenced again)
Ruby reveals she’s a demon—but she not like the rest and she can help save Dean (and I’m yelling ‘don’t fall for it Sam’ at the TV…)

47. Bad Day at Black Rock (3.03)—W: Edlund/D: Singer
Recap: Dad’s deal, Ruby, Gordon
Gordon tells Kubrick ‘Sam must die’—Kubrick initially skeptical, Winchesters have good reputation
Sam calls Ruby by name when talking to Dean—first time we learn her name
Sam is upfront about Ruby being a demon and Dean is pissed Sam didn’t end her immediately—‘She knows your weakness is me’
Sam insists he is smart enough not to be tricked—will use her, not trust her
Dean keeps Dad’s old phones charged in case an old contact calls
Dean about John: ‘Him and his secrets’
John kept Sam’s 1995 soccer trophy and Dean’s first sawed-off from 6th grade

‘I lost my shoe’
Visual of Sam sitting in motel chair is shot through a circle of the room divider—striking!
Smart Dean gets past Bela’s security system
Bela: ‘We’re all going to hell, Dean…might as well enjoy the ride’ That’s some foreshadowing…wonder if writers had her story plotted out already
Smart Dean snakes the rabbit foot, we (and Bela) don’t see how he did it
Dean’s ‘I can read people’ ploy doesn’t work on Bela and she shoots Sam
Smart Dean’s fast thinking to toss Bela the rabbit foot
This is a great comedic episode!

48. Sin City (3.04)—W: Singer & Carver/D: Beeson
Recap: Devil’s Gate, Ruby, Colt
Different suits
2 months since Devil’s Gate
Bobby ‘fixing’ Colt—but it wasn’t broken, just out of bullets?
Cool visual shot of boys entering motel as ceiling mirror reflection
Dean knows Richie—hunted succubus together while Sam in school
Dean ogling women
Dean worried about Richie
Ruby shows up at Bobby’s to help fix Colt
Dean turns down hooker, picks up bartender
Sam caught in suspected demon’s office—only he’s not a demon—oops
Smart Dean knew bartender was demon because he turned on Riche’s GPS and found the body
Dean needs book to do exorcism
This exorcism starts ‘Spiritus immunde’
Casey: ‘Do you believe in God, Dean’?—Dean: ‘I’d like to’

Sam asks priest for help—and only audience sees his black eyes
Dean: ‘What’s the point in worrying about a future when you don’t have one?’
Dean denies being scared…but hesitates before answering
Priest tells Sam he could do great things
YED is identified as Azazel
Sam was supposed to lead Azazel’s demon army—killing him ruined the plan and now hell is in chaos
Bobby, Ruby, and Colt to the rescue
Sam shoots demons without any hesitation, no concern for humans
Dean asks Bobby if he thinks there’s something wrong with Sam—Bobby says no
When Ruby congratulates Sam on killing 2 demons he says he also killed 2 humans—Ruby: ‘you probably did them a favor’
Sam comes thisclose to shooting Ruby with Colt but she gets to him with killing her won’t help Dean and he backs down—I think this is the point at which she got him
Ruby tells Sam he’s going to have to toughen up
Ruby is playing Sam perfectly…sigh
The whole ‘humans are worse than demons’ premise bores me…

49. Bedtime Stories (3.05)—W: Humphris/D: Rohl
Recap: variety of hunts Colt, crossroads demon, 100% Sam?
Knowing the fairy tale premise on rewatch there are multiple hints to 3 little pigs story
Sam wants to summon crossroad demon and kill her to break Dean’s deal—big fight
Random frog throughout episode?
Victim: ‘He killed my brothers…How would you feel?’—Sam: ‘Can’t imagine anything worse’
Cheap laugh at Sam’s pathetic drawing…sigh
The old lady is really sweet until she tries to kill the couple
Another evil little girl…
Hikers were lost on little trail when they found old woman’s house—Impala is parked right in front of it now in a big clear space…
Smart Sam thinks of fairy tales but plot really stretches it on coincidences and leaps of logic…
Dean can supply all the movie references including porn versions…
Dean: ‘I’m gonna go stop the big bad wolf—which is the weirdest thing I’ve ever said’ (Just wait until you get to kill Hitler, Dean)
Sam has impossible job of convincing doctor his daughter’s spirit is killing people…luckily doctor has seen her ghost
Tense intercutting between doctor talking daughter down and Dean fighting bad guy
Poor actress who played adult Callie spent entire role in bed with eyes closed
Doctor said he had to let her go, Dean tells Sam that’s good advice, then Dean walks down hall while Sam stands there alone—painful visual
Sam sneaks out to crossroad
Apparently same crossroad demon each time, just different meatsuits
Demon says Ruby is a pain in the ass
Demon taunts Sam, does he really want to break the deal? Isn’t he tired of Dean’s messes, of being bossed around—‘you’re better than him’
Demon says there’s a ‘he’ that holds the contract—(it’s actually Lilith but per commentary writers didn’t have her character determined yet)
Sam coldly kills demon—Jared is really tough on his girlfriends…

50. Red Sky at Morning (3.06)—W: Andries/D: Bole
Recap—Bela; Sam killing crossroad demon
That is one big bathroom
Dean calls Sam out on missing bullet—Sam: ‘I’m…not gonna apologize for it’
Sport coats and slacks
Older woman going after Sam annoyingly exaggerated
They change into different suits

Sam says 4 names at start of ritual: Aziel, Castiel, Lamisniel, Rabam—hmmm
No explanation of ritual source or purpose
Bela gives them $10,000
Dean tries to mend fences with Sam about crossroad demon: You know, situation was reversed, I guess I'd've done the same thing…I see what you're going through with this whole deal…But you're gonna be okay.—Sam: Go Screw yourself… I don't want you to worry about me, Dean, I want you to worry about you! I want you to give a crap that you’re dying!
Major communication failure…sigh

51. Fresh Blood (3.07)—W: Gamble/D: Manners
Finally show is visually dark again
Recap: Bela, Gordon
The iconic bridge—only with Bela and Gordon
Sam Winchester is the anti-Christ
Bela stands up to Gordon but sells boys out for valuable hex bag
Dean slices his forearm to draw vampire—think this is the first time they sliced themselves on purpose
Sam: ‘If you tell us what happened we’ll let you go’ even though he knows they can’t
Lucy got drugged by old man ‘like 30’
Dean treats Lucy very harshly
Dean actually kills her (off-camera) and Sam flinches
Squatting again
Dean says they have to kill Gordon this time but is unhappy Sam agrees, Sam should be protesting he’s human
Both feel bad about killing Lucy
Sterling K. Brown really sells the narrative that every villain is the hero of his own story and he is terrifying
Very effective soundtrack when Gordon is turned—exaggerated ticking, heartbeats
Vamp tells Dean to kill him: ‘I’ve lost everyone I’ve ever loved. I’m staring down eternity alone…Can you think of a worse fate?’
Dean all gung-ho to go after Gordon while Sam has to stay safe in room—Sam wants Dean to take his fate seriously and admit he’s scared: ‘I’ve been following you around my entire life…looking up to you since I was 4…trying to be just like my big brother…I wish you would drop the show and be my brother again…’cause…’—And Dean listens
Use herbs to hide scent from Gordon like they did in ‘Dead Man’s Blood’
Gordon got Dean’s new cell number because he tracked Dean’s to store
Gordon to Sam: ‘I know how it is walking around with something evil inside you.’
Sam killing Gordon impressive but Sam walking around in infrared light with his arms out looks comical, not tough—wish they would have had Jared do something better
Brotherly bonding over Impala care—both trying to make up
I think this is the first appearance of the green cooler

52. A Very Supernatural Christmas (3.08)—W: Carver/D: Miller Tobin
‘Special Presentation’ spinning logo
‘A Very Supernatural Christmas’ title card

Sam resolves emotional moment by suggesting they watch the game

Recap: Ruby, her blade, Colt, argue over deal, worry about Sam being 100%

Sam argues he knows what he’s doing with Ruby, that he’s not being strung along
Sam: ‘we're not just hunting anymore. We're at war… And I gotta stay here in this craphole of a world. Alone. So the way I see it…if I'm gonna fight this war after you're gone, then I gotta change…I gotta be more like you’
Looking for hex bag Sam slices open the mattress which makes no sense, if hex bag had been put in mattress it would already have been cut
Demon stops bullet by raising her hand

Dream Lisa: ‘I love you’
Nice transition from actual forest to hotel with forest walls
All the doors in Dean’s mind
Jeremy whaling on Sam with bat
Dean to Dream Dean: ‘I get it, I’m my own worst nightmare’
Dream Dean lays out all the insecurities: ‘look int a mirror and hate what you see…it’s not much of a life worth saving…as mindless and obedient as an attack dog…Sam he (Dad) loved…Dad knew who you really were…Daddy’s blunt little instrument…your own father didn’t care whether you lived or died, why should you’
Dean: My father was an obsessed bastard…he’s the one who couldn’t protect his family…he’s the one who let Mom die…who wasn’t there for Sam…I didn’t deserve what he put on me…and I don’t deserve to go to hell!
Dream Dean with black eyes: ‘You’re gonna die…and this is what you’re gonna become’

55. Mystery Spot (3.11)—W: Carver & McLaughlin/D: Manners
Recap: monsters including Trickster; deal, Colt, Bela, Ruby ‘get Sam ready’
Another episode that feels very different knowing what happens
Dean finds a bra left in his bag
The first morning they actually walk past all the things that kill Dean in later repetitions
Sam when Dean dies first time: ‘Not like this!’
Sam doesn’t tell Dean he died until after the second reset
Dean believes Sam even without proof: ‘Whatever this is, we’ll figure it out’
They wear suits that fit better than previous ones
Sam says there have been 100 Tuesdays
Sam notices the strawberry instead of maple syrup and the day resets immediately without Dean dying
Sam goes after the maple syrup man right away the next day
Sam is fully prepared to kill the man, no hesitation
Trickster: ‘This is so not about killing Dean…you can’t save your brother’
Wednesday Dean asks how many Tuesdays did Sam have—Dean only remembers ‘you were whacked out and we met the Trickster’
We see how hard Sam has become while voicemails from Bobby fill us in
When Bobby says they need a gallon of human blood for spell Sam doesn’t blink—Bobby is horrified and offers himself so Sam won’t kill an innocent
Sam kills him without hesitation: ‘You’re not Bobby’—then when Bobby appears to really be dead he has a moment of panic
Trickster warns Sam nothing good comes out of obsession: ‘Dean's your weakness. And the bad guys know it, too. It's gonna be the death of you, Sam. Sometimes you just gotta let people go.’
Second brotherly hug—Dean bewildered
In retrospect the foreshadowing in this episode is devastating

56. Jus in Bell0 (3.12)—W: Gamble/D: Sgriccia
Recap: War’s just begun—Henrickson, Ruby, stolen Colt
Bela tips off the cops to keep them from coming after her
Boys don’t have a way out of this
Henrickson really has it in for them, gloats
When possessed FBI chief shoots Dean Sam grabs the gun and does exorcism from memory
Henrickson thinks it’s psycho friends of boys
He is harsh to everyone except Nancy
Sam gets Nancy to bring a towel for Dean’s shoulder—and then grabs her rosary
Once Henrickson has been possessed he is suddenly on the boys’ team—Dean: ‘I owe (you) the biggest “I told you so” ever’
The first demon attack on the building is strictly smoke
Boys reveal matching tattoos!
Henricksen: ‘How long have you had those?’—Sam: ‘Not long enough’
When Henricksen asks if they can win Dean says the world is gonna end bloody but he chooses to go down swinging
Ruby mentions big bad after Sam and Dean didn’t know about it—Ruby: ‘You didn’t tell Dean?...Lilith…really, really wants Sam’s intestines on a stick’
Dean is completely flummoxed that Nancy is a virgin in this day and age
Dean appalled that Sam would consider Ruby’s plan to sacrifice Nancy: ‘If that’s how you win wars, then I don’t want to win’
Smart Dean plan to trap and do mass exorcism
Demon smoke burns up—maybe because they are trapped in salt???
Henrickson is converted
Another creepy girl…
The boys’ shock at everyone dying anyway
Ruby gives them hex bags to hide them from Lilith
Ruby really pushes that they should have listened to her
Note: This episode was actually filmed before ‘Mystery Spot’ but was last episode broadcast before Writers’ Strike—Kripke planned it for series finale if they didn’t get picked up.

57. Ghostfacers (3.13)—W: Edlund/D: Sgriccia
Recap: Ed and Harry, Deal
The Supernatural title card frizzes out and dissolves to Ed and Harry
Ed and Harry suggest their program is a viable alternative since the Writers’ Strike has stopped TV production
Sam and Dean appear in the Ghostfacers titles along with the rest of the Ghostfacers crew
Bleeping out all the swear words
First time we hear about death echoes
Dean refers to the Morton House as their Grand Canyon
Ed to Corbett’s death echo: ‘Wake up and be dead!’
Dean yelling SAM!
‘You gotta be gay for that poor dead intern’
Smart boys leave magnetic booby trap to wipe out Ghostfacers’ computer files
First episode filmed after the strike
Personal note—I remembered not liking this episode, but it was better than I remembered upon rewatch

58. Long Distance Call (3.14)—W: Carver/D: Singer
Recap: Dean’s deal, Lilith
People still had landlines then LOL
You could just ignore the call…
Dean tells Sam Ruby told him there was no way to break the deal
Boys wear 2 different sets of suits in this episode
Sam is driving a rental car without any explanation
Girl calls out Sam wearing a cheap suit
Sam’s hair is goofy again
Sam doesn’t press the witness for information—uncharacteristic since she’s potentially in danger
Surprising that Sam doesn’t jump on the idea that Dad is calling with a way to break the deal since he’s been all about that all season
Dean: ‘Why can’t we hear from our loved ones?’
Hurts to see how Dean jumps on the hope this is real
The green stars room divider 😊
Feels like a real mystery, not getting lots of lore theory
According to ‘Dad’ the demon that holds Dean’s contract is here—Dean goes along, Sam says he needs proof it’s Dad
Smart Sam realizes it’s a crocotta from the phrase ‘come to me’
Scarily effective set-up to have Dean think he’s killing the demon while the father thinks Dean is the man who murdered his daughter—both are fighting for vengeance
Sam is sorry it wasn’t dad—Dean: ‘I wanted to believe so badly that there was a way outta this. I mean I'm staring down the barrel at this thing. You know, Hell. For real, forever, and I just...I’m scared, Sam. I’m really scared…I can't expect Dad to show up with some miracle at the last minute. I can't expect anybody to, you know. I mean the only person that can get me out of this thing is me’—Sam: ‘And me’—Dean: ‘…having a real moment here, that's what you come back with? And me?’ (Really, what did Dean want Sam to say?)

59. Time is on my Side (3.15)—W: Gamble/D: Beeson
Recap—Lilith, Bela, Colt
Boys torturing demon with holy water—exorcism him but human is dead—Dean: ‘Demons ride ‘em hard just for kicks…’—justification for disregarding how Sam and Dean start ignoring the fact that the demons are possessing real people?
3 weeks from Dean’s deal—Dean distressed that Sam wants to take a job now
Nice fitting suits again
Doc Benton is in Dad’s journal—Dad took his heart out in 1983 (do I even want to think about the logistics of how he put a new heart in himself? Probably not…)
Bobby tells them Rufus has a tip on Bela—Dean wants to go after her to find the Colt, Sam thinks hunt more important
Sam admits he knew the hunt was about Benton and he has a plan to make Dean immortal like Benton to stop the deal
When Dean points out breaking the deal kills Sam, he says then he’ll use Benton’s method to be immortal too
Sam is totally ignoring that they would have to kill other people to keep their immortality and that Dean would never do that
Rufus lives in Vermont
Rufus: ‘For folks like us there ain’t no happy ending’
Sam using rental car again
Dean really lays into Bela for why he thinks she made a deal—only we see the real reason
He is about to shoot her when he sees the herb above Bela’s door and realizes she’s trying to stave off the hellhounds after her
When Dean returns he tells Sam he is really screwed
Benton about to take out Sam’s eye is a horrific visual
Smart Dean figures out to use chloroform on the knife to knock out Benton
Smart boys leave dummies for Bela
Dean says if she’d only asked for help they could have taken the Colt and saved her
Bela tells Dean Lilith has his contract

60. No Rest for the Wicked (3.16)—W: Kripke/D: Manners
Road So Far—30 hours left; Sam’s not going to let Dean die; distorted face
Bobby casts location spell for Lilith with fancy apparatus
Sam wants to summon Ruby, Dean is adamantly against it
Sam does it anyway using a triangle design (very different than what John used to summon Azazel)
When Sam challenges Ruby on why she didn’t tell them the truth about Lilith she claims she was protecting them and that she was waiting until Sam was ready to use his special abilities—she implies that Sam is stronger than Lilith if he gives in to using them (Her gaslighting skills are incredible and Sam just doesn’t see how she’s manipulating him!)
Dean has devil’s trap ready for Ruby but it’s not clear if he and Sam worked this plan out together or if he knew Sam was going to summon Ruby and so made a plan for it
Smart Dean gets Ruby’s knife during the fight
Sam tries to talk Dean into considering fighting Lilith Ruby’s way
Dean: ‘We stop being martyrs…We take this knife, and we go after Lilith our way. The way Dad taught us to. And if we go down...then we go down swinging’
Bobby is not a ditchable prom date
Bobby: ‘Family don’t end in blood’
OMG another awful little girl (I really wanted to smack her)
Boys sing ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’—the way they got into it made me think they were recreating something they did a lot growing up, almost felt like a flashback to ‘easier’ days
Dean kills demon cops without second thought
Why bother hiding the squad car?
Demons around New Harmony don’t get any attempts at being exorcised…
When dad starts to argue about going to basement without his wife Dean just knocks him out
Ruby goes into a room by herself right before Sam opens door to kid’s room—assume this is when Lilith takes over
Sam not totally turned hardcase yet, he hesitates (fortunately!) about killing the little girl
Dean: ‘Keep fighting. Take care of my wheels…remember what Dad taught you…and remember what I taught you.’
OMG. If I had been watching live at this point I would have died

Final season notes—The boys wear suits a lot this season, way more than previously. Also they start saying their ID aliases which are mostly rock music names.

Ahhh, one of my fav seasons. Though the addition of Lisa and Ben threw me for a loop...and honestly, I was never that keen on her. But that's me and I learned do not say this to Fandom...just...don't. Other than that? One of my top seasons. Just so many riches to mine for fic there - at least for a darkficcer like me. Eep.

*HUGS*
