Feeling Good about my Supernatural Life
Apr. 16th, 2010 10:42 amI have no idea how many of my fellow Supernatural writers read my LJ regularly, but I have written a few fanfic pieces to positive response, and in the general afterglow of last night's episode I was thinking about how I really am enjoyig writing about Sam and Dean, and why doing that makes me happy.
And I realized that a lot of the fun is connected to having made a friend who is a fabulous beta and cheerleader,
sandymg , who is a kick-ass writer in her own right.
It just is so satisfying to have someone to send story segments to who reads them understanding what baseline you're starting from, and catches the little bits of development you put in deliberately to make this version of the boys unique yet, what is important to me, true to canon.
Even better is when she sends it back with little adjustments that make what you intended to say resonate even more. And when you are completely stuck and say "Help!" she writes a scene for your story that exactly fills in the part you were stuck on and she is delighted to be able to do that for you!
And the best part? I am her beta and she trusts me with her 'babies' and lets me tweak and add descriptive bits and doesn't feel threatened by my comments but accepts that I am simply wanting to help make her story un-put-down-able!
So that's my happy feelings for today on top of feeling happy about "Point of No Return" and I'm going to spill a secret: I'm 2/3 done with a new story (10,000 words so far!) that I am really pleased with and hope, hope, hope will be of interest to others.
It's about Dean first meeting Cassie--which I have been warned is kind of 'kiss of death' because of her unpopularity. My goal is to make what is shown in the episode feel more authentic by knowing the backstory.
sandymg was skeptical this could be done, but one of her recent edits included the comment that she actually was liking Cassie a little which she didn't think was possible. So I have hope...
And if you haven't read
sandymg 's fanfic, you need to do this immediately! She so rocks!
PS She has no idea I posted this. I am just feeling very happy this morning!

Date: 2010-04-17 11:06 pm (UTC)I guarantee you, it's a problem 'interloper' lovers have in every fandom. Buffy fans that hated Riley because he was the new man, Stargate fans who hated Pete because he was Sam's new man - let's not even talk about 'shipper wars.
Because SPN doesn't have 'ships, as such, there are really only two known official ones, (Sam/Jess and John/Mary) and for both of them the woman in question was dead in realtime minutes, it's kind of an all-boys club. You put a girrrrrrrl into the mix, and you're ruining the all boys thing as well as upsetting the balance between Sam and Dean as it stands. Don't forget the number of people who don't like Jo Harvelle either. Cassie has the extra trouble of being someone who had trouble accepting Dean's chosen path in life. So we all *have* to hate her.
Worse yet, all of Sam's relationships (following Jess), however brief, have all been with women who accepted who and what Sam was without seeming reservation. Dean hasn't had that, and the thing with Jo never went anywhere.
Personally, I rather liked Cassie, but I'm biased, since that's one of my favourite episodes. Sam makes me gleeful in that ep. I always saw her point as well taken. She thinks she's going to have a life with this guy and then he goes and tells her this crazy story about hunting ghosts and he has to leave to work with his father at his ghost hunting gig. I'd be pretty leery too. Especially without any hard proof.
Good luck and kudos on taking on an unpopular character.
