The story of how I ended up at SeaCon this year when I live in Chicago is a bit convoluted.

My youngest daughter, Adrienne lives in Tacoma WA. When I first became a Supernatural fan back 8 years ago, I tried to get her interested. She watched as far as 'Bugs' and gave up. Then during Christmas 2015, during a random conversation at our family gathering, Adrienne made a comment 'just like a leviathan.' Now my first thought, (with, I am told, a very puzzled expression on my face,) was, 'why would Adrienne be reading the Bible?' but that didn't fit the context of her remark. So I hesitatingly asked 'do you mean like a Supernatural leviathan?' It turns out that for my Christmas present she had watched the whole series to the present and had been waiting for an opportunity to drop a Supernatural reference to see my face!

Move forward to spring when the SeaCon tickets were put on sale--and I half-jokingly asked her whether I should come visit her and take her to a con--and she said sure!

So that is how I ended up attending SeaCon with my youngest daughter!

We only went to the Saturday Night Special and for Sunday, but it was so much fun to see Adrienne get why I love Jared and Jensen!

Saturday Night Special Concert

Louden Swain started off with a couple of songs off their new CD, then Matt Cohen came out for ‘Blister in the Sun.’ Mark Pellegrino did a Green Day song, Jason Manns performed (his song ended with him holding a note for way longer than humanly possible as the band tried to break him but didn’t), and the usual guests (Chris Schmelke, Adam Malin, Stephanie Dizon, Mark Sheppard on drums) did their thing. The energy picked up when Richard Speight came out and they did ‘Whipping Post’ with Rob on lead, tearing his voice out—Rob Benedict can really sing!—which was followed by the lovely harmonies of ‘Wagon Wheel.’

The best part of the concert was the series of songs at the end. First everyone left the stage except Rob and he did ‘Fare Thee Well’ with just his guitar. So beautiful! The hall was dead silent (Adrienne said after this was the politest rock concert she’s ever been too) until he finished. After thunderous applause, the band came back and did ‘She Waits.’ While we’d been standing in line before the concert, a fan had come around giving everyone battery-powered tealights to hold during this song (she had labeled 700 of them!) The room lit up with the little lights and Rob’s emotion while singing was palpable. When he finished he didn’t have words at first, clearly blown away by the feelings from the audience. Finally he said when he saw all the lights it was like he was floating. I swear, during that song, that entire ballroom was a concentrated ball of pure love, a feedback loop between the crowd and the stage and it’s something I will always remember!

It took Rob several minutes to get back to singing, and he followed ‘She Waits’ with the antidote ‘Mamma’s Jam’ with Matt Cohen out in the audience hyping the audience like a maniac. Then came ‘Medicated’ which, if you’ve never heard it, has a kazoo interlude. Which all the fans know, and come prepared with their kazoos. As all the guests came out with their kazoos as well, Rob gave all the kazoos a sound check, then went into the song with just Billy Moran’s guitar accompaniment. When he got to the kazoo solo Rob stoked the audience to do it many more repeats than are in the song, clearly loving the back and forth playing with the crowd. He then had the guests do their kazoos without us, critiquing their efforts, picking on them for the sadness of their performance as they were laughing too hard to do it right.

Ending the concert with a kazoo chorus from the audience was just perfect!

Jensen Photo Op

Because this was a once-in-a-lifetime deal for Adrienne, I impulsively bid on and won tickets to the boys' Meet and Greets. Because of that, Sunday morning Adrienne and I were at the front of Jensen’s photo op line, along with our friend Felicia. We watched Jensen walk in and greet the photographer Chris with hugs and talking in his ear (the only way to be heard over the very loud music.)

He was wearing a tan sweater over a dark t-shirt and had fairly heavy stubble. I thought his face looked more angular—thinner—than I’ve seen it up close before, and that he looked a little tired.

I believe Felicia was the third photo, Adrienne and I next. I told him it was my daughter’s first con. He smiled, arms were put around each other, and the picture was snapped. (Adrienne said she thought he’s very skinny and very firm. J I always am surprised at how he looks thinner in person, too.)

Jared Meet and Greet

Then Adrienne and I headed to the M&G room. I had to laugh because Jared’s chair was pre-turned backwards—the volunteers have learned. Adrienne had seat # 3 in the first row, I was behind and to the left of her.

Jared came in wearing a dark jacket and scarf, no beanie (yay!) and also with more stubble than usual. His hair, IMO, was perfect, gently swooping gracefully up and off his forehead…

Other times Jared has come in to his M&G and just started rambling before getting to questions, but today he just said ‘how’s it going’ and nodded at our response of ‘fine!’ Someone said ‘congratulations!’ and he joked back, ‘I think you mispronounced condolences.’

Jared looked to his left and said ‘let’s just go in order.’ He directed front row, back row, front row so no one had to raise their hand. (When his handler gave him the time’s up sign there were 3 fans left and Jared said he was going to finish, so everyone got to ask him something!) A little bit of what he talked about:

Gen picked Odette's name. Tom loves to hug and kiss her, but Shep isn't so sure.

Adrienne asked, in the scene with Billie after the boys got out of the fed prison, if Cas hadn’t shown up, who would have gone with her? Jared said a scene was shot of the two of them each ready to go, nodding at each other and telling the other to keep going. He didn’t actually answer though which one would have won the self-sacrificing contest.

Asked about his favorite scene in season 12, he said it was just filmed—a scene in the bunker’s electrical room in 12.22 between Sam and Dean. ‘I think the script says the hug everyone’s been waiting all season for.’ (!)

I asked if he could describe what a typical day on set is like. Jared immediately said ‘BORING!’ He gets up 2-3 hours before call time, has coffee, then looks over the day’s lines while on the treadmill. Hair, makeup, and wardrobe, then they sit and wait while the scene is set up…do their thing for 3 hours, and then it’s time for food.

He segued into talking about the chicken Thai soup that catering makes—you either love it or hate it. Jensen thinks it smells like vomit but Jared loves it, so he eats it right in Jensen’s face. One time Jensen pushed him away and the soup got spilled all over Jared so he had to get cleaned up by wardrobe before they could go back to filming.

The woman in front of me was having a hard time getting her question out and said her daughter, some seats over, was her support. The fan sitting next to the mom stood up and switched seats with the daughter. Jared said ‘this is why we give up our weekends, to see this interaction, how the SPN family takes care of each other!’ This is what he referenced during the main panel, too. Clearly how the fans treat each other really makes an impression on him!

When she finally managed her question, it was about childhood vacations—did his family have anyplace they went in the summers? Jared said every summer they’d drive down to a town near Corpus Christi and stay in a $30 motel where the kids would sleep on blankets on the floor. His dad would wake them up at 3 am to go fishing off the pier. Those family vacations are very happy memories for him.

His first plane flight was when he went to LA to pursue acting.

If John came back now, how would he fell about what Sam and Dean are doing? Jared thinks John would be upset—once Azazel was gone, John would have wanted his boys to have wives and kids and regular lives.

Whose idea was it to get bees, his or Gen’s, and how hard was it to persuade the other person? Jared laughed and said it was Gen’s, and there was no persuasion involved—when Gen wants something, she says this is what’s happening. Which is why they have bees and chickens and bunnies…and we shouldn’t be surprised when we hear they’ve got fainting goats. Gen’s wanted them for a long time.

After he answered the last fan’s question, Jared thanked us, gave us that million dollar smile, and left a room of melted hearts.

Jared Photo Op

We had about 90 minutes to recover and relive the M&G before Jared’s photo op. Again we were near the front of the line. After Felicia got an adorable hug, Adrienne got her moment J As with Jensen, I said, “This is my daughter’s first con” as he was putting an arm around each of us. Jared pulled back, turned right to Adrienne and said “Oh yeah? How is it?” She managed “It’s awesome!” and he said “Great! I’m glad!” then settled into the hug pose.

With Adrienne completely dazed from being the recipient of Jared’s complete attention for 20 seconds, we hurried to Jensen’s M&G, where Adrienne ended up with the exact same seat in the front row.

Jensen Meet and Greet

He came in with a ‘hi, how are you, let’s get started’ approach and looked for raised hands. The first question was the same as one Jared had been asked: what was Jensen’s favorite scene to film this year?

Jensen spent a few minutes going through moments in his mind—was that this year? The boys’ scene in the car in Baby—oh, that was last year…Someone mentioned Jared’s answer of a scene in 12.22 in the electrical room, and Jensen jumped on that one. He said there are some moments that you read in the script and know they are going to be amazing, but there are some that are hidden gems—you read them in the script and they don’t stand out, but when you film them they take you by surprise, and the bunker scene was like that. He’s really pleased that, after 12 years, he and Jared can still have those moments of surprise from the writing and from acting together.

Dean stuffing the mints in his pocket in the fancy hotel Mick took them to was an ad-lib, he totally knew Dean would have done that.

He was asked, having directed several times, what would he tell himself as a first-time director? He said ignorance is bliss—the first time was easier because he didn’t know how much he didn’t know. Now he knows more lenses, more transitions, so there are more decisions to be made in prep. Directing is all about the preparation.

Did his family have annual vacations? Jensen said his dad, grandfather, brother and he would go to an abandoned ranch that a family friend owned and stay there so the men could go fishing.

I asked ‘how’s it going with the twins?’ ‘Ask my wife!’ He said it’s mostly Danneel it’s fallen on. But 2 babies need so much stuff! They went on an outing to the grocery store and you’d have thought they were packing for 6 weeks!

Observation: when Jared answers a question, the whole room gets his story. When Jensen answers a question, he answers YOU—he doesn’t take his eyes off you until he’s done. It’s…overwhelming…

Another fan asked Jensen to describe a day on set. His answer was similar to Jared’s, hair makeup, wardrobe, waiting, 3 hours work then soup and sandwiches, 3 hours more work, lunch, 3 more hours, then hot food—he joked that filming really revolves around the food! While setups are being changed, he and Jared can go back to their trailers. They might have 10 minutes or they might have an hour to make a phone call, check email—but they never know how much time they’ll have.

When time was up and he left with a smile.

Mark Sheppard’s Panel

Just going to include a couple things that stood out to me during the afternoon. Mark Sheppard went off on a passionate and articulate tangent when asked about the difference between filming in Britain and in the US. Once he answered ‘money’ he went on to talk about:
·         The absurdity of Neilson ratings from a small group of people determining actual viewership
·         The rise of social media in determining which shows have followings that count
·         ‘Firefly’ died because it was before social media
·         SPN bridged the change and that’s why it’s still going
·         Shows written by determined people who believe in what they want to say need to be championed
·         How every successful show is built on the backs of what came before it—‘Hill Street Blues’ which he was recently rewatching is a perfect example of how it influenced what came after

I’m not recapping the J2 panel as there are videos of it out there. Suffice it to say they were totally charming and playful with each other as usual, and not shy about being silly. (If you haven’t seen a clip of their dance moves, you simply must.)

Rich and Rob Panel

The last panel of the day was Rich and Rob, and I got in line to ask a question. Most of the questions were silly, but I was the last question of the con and asked how did the Saturday Night concerts evolve.  Rich gave a lovely, sincere answer, going back to how things had been done years ago on Saturday nights. Originally there had been a ‘speed dating’ sort of setup, where the fans sat at tables and the actors went from table to table for a few minutes each, and the actors hated it.

Creation had been experimenting with music and Louden Swain had been booked to play on a Saturday night, but Rob had his stroke. Instead of cancelling, they decided to ask other con guests who had some musical experience to fill in, so Brian Buckley and Jason Manns and some others stepped in for a little concert—maybe 50 people—and it was a kind of ‘get-well’ show for Rob. Then Rob was able to come back, and for his return concert in Vegas, again had as many guests as wanted joined them on stage for a celebration of Rob’s return—a ‘welcome back to good health’ concert, and it just became what they do.

That sums up everything I can remember about SeaCon—glad to share the experience with all of you!

Oh my, what a lovely way to end up at the con and with a family member too! That's the best, right? Having someone get why you love these guys and this show :DDDD Thanks for such a lovely detailed account of your time, I wish I could go to a US con but money etc etc so reading through your post gave me a feeling of being there with you :D Also, the story of what happened when Rob had his stroke - eyeball leakage!

Seeing Adrienne fall in love with the boys was the best part--especially her 'moment' with Jared! She was in a daze for the rest of the day :)

Words cannot describe how happy I am right now. Lots of squeeing and also a couple of tears just thinking that next weekend it will be my turn and I thought I was excited before but after reading the awesome time you had I am a million times more looking forward to seeing J2.

Thank you so much for including details of the M&G and your photos and the Sat concert. They are doing a Louden Swain/Jason Manns concert too next Sat night and I just hope it's as wonderful as yours was. Am also hoping that Jensen might perform, would be amazing but I love hearing and watching Rob and the others performing as well. Haven't heard him do 'Fare Thee Well' live yet, so that is sure to be a highlight.

Hope the boys are getting plenty of rest and that they aren't too jet-lagged by the long trip DownUnder.

Awesome report! How wonderful you got to take your daughter too (and I love that she saved up the SPN watching to surprise you, that's so funny!). And you got the last question of the convention too - how cool is that?

I wonder if Adrienne will have the convention bug now, having experienced one and had such a great time. I love your photos - you both look really happy!

Adrienne thinks she's been spoiled for ever going again because of getting the meet and greet time--she doesn't think that experience can be topped :)

Oh, you were there, too! That's amazing--thank you so much for writing this, and sharing the beautiful photos! I will also never forget that moment in the concert, and also, Rob laughing about having a one on one interaction with a fan who called out, "Good job, Rob," after " Fare thee Well. ". Really appreciated Mark's panels, too, the snark always followed by a sincere appreciation for fandom.

And, omg, the meet and greets! What an awesome experience! Thank you, again for sharing this.

how lovely that you were able to attend this Con with your daughter. Interesting story about how the SNS came to be. I also found it interesting that the actors didn't care too much for the speed dating type meeting on the Saturday night. I only attended the one time and felt it was a forced thing and not getting all that much time with the actors. The SNS is much better.

I've been to one Jensen M&G and loved it. I also noticed that Jensen looks to the questioner only when he is answering his question. His focus on you while answering can be beautifully overwhelming depending on the question. Someday I hope to get to another one, and a Jared one too.

This was a wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

I only attended the one time...

Was that at VanCon 2011? That's where we met :)

I honestly hadn't known that the 'speed dating' morphed into the SNS--which is infinitely better!

I think the M&G I went to was my 3rd or 4th VanCon. Not sure. This will be my 7th year. WOW.

I know that the last 'speed dating' night at VanCon was largely a failure. I heard that things ran so late and attendance was not as good as it could have been. I'm very glad it morphed how it did. The SNS is very much infinitely better.

Lovely write-up :). It's always really cool to read about peoples' first experience of a con and of meeting the boys :). I'm glad you both had a great time :).

I've had M&Gs with both Jensen and Jared and they're both just great :). My first ever con, the M&G with Jensen was the highlight of my weekend - I was so nervous I couldn't even talk to him in photo ops and refused to even get an auto from him because I was too embarrassed, but in the M&G, sitting around a table with him, it was more like chatting to a friend than a fan-celebrity meeting. I managed to ask a question and he held eye-contact with me the entire time he was answering... and all I could do was grin and nod like a crazy person :P!

I don't know how they do it, but both of them, when you're interacting with them for 20 seconds or whatever, make it seem like you are the complete center of their attention...They are both the nicest people!

Oh wow! What a wonderful present to have your daughter into the spn family! Tell her we said welcome! And then to go to a con together had to be the best! She could see the fun craziness of the con and the con-goers, lol. I'm so glad you both had a great time there and good lord Jared is tall! Jensen and Jared are both sexy beasts and true gentlemen. :)
